A depleted U12 Girls team took on Alton this Sunday afternoon. A sickness bug forced the morning's U14 match to be cancelled and the U12 lost a number of players. With a bare eleven players, the team made their way to a cold and windy Eggar's School for the match.
Fareham started the first period and were immediately forced to defend. The Alton team were very strong intercepting our passes and counterattacking. For the first 10 minutes the Fareham defence worked hard against the Alton attacks. We started to find our feet and made a few forays into the Alton 23. Close to the end of the period, Alton managed to score from a scramble in front of goal.
The team started the second period with ferocity, they wanted to find the Alton goal. Fareham made many attacks into the Alton D but weren't able to find the goal. Fareham won a series of short corners at the end of the period. Grace had a shot saved by the Alton keeper but the ball can straight back - with a sharp shot, Fareham levelled the score.
The third period was a difficult one for Fareham. Energy levels were dropping fast and Alton were making good breaks down the wing. The opposition were breaking through our defences and then into a 1-1 situation with our keeper, Lauren. Alton, in a strong display of their skills, added five goals in the period.
The girls should be proud of their game - they kept their heads up and the score was not reflective of the game. Players of the match for Fareham; Phoebe and Lauren. Special mention goes to Ella playing in her first game after only 6 weeks of playing hockey - well played!
Many thanks to the parents for supporting on such a cold day and Dave for umpiring again.
