Alan Salmons

  Alan Gordon Salmons - 16th March 1934 to 22nd February 2018   Alan Salmons, a much valued member of Fareham Hockey Club and Fareham Cricket Club, passed away on 22nd February 2018 after a short illness.  His association with both Clubs spanned over 60 years.  He played in both Fareham Hockey Club 1st XI and Fareham Cricket Club 1st XI as well as supporting the Clubs in a number of other roles.  Alan also played hockey for Hampshire Veterans.  Alan was also a great friend of Havant Hockey Club and he joined them on a number of supporter trips both at home and abroad and could often be found watching from the sidelines at Havant Park and Havant College.  Alan was born in Portsmouth in 1934 and moved to Fareham just prior to the Second World War.  He attended Redlands Lane and Harrison Road Schools in Fareham before attending St. Luke’s School in Portsmouth.  After leaving school he joined Portsmouth City Police and was a Cadet for 4 years. 2 years National Service in the RAF followed.  Following his National Service he re-joined Portsmouth City Police before working for Cow & Gate and Sharps Classic Cards.  His final job was working as a Pharmaceutical Representative for Bristol Myers Squibb, working for them for 26 years, before taking early retirement at 60 years of age.  Alan married Margaret in 1957 and they lived in Fareham for the whole of their married lives.  Sadly Margaret passed away in 2013. Their daughter, Jane, was born in 1963 and in 1985 she married David Faulkner who played for Havant Hockey Club and indoor hockey for Fareham Hockey Club.  Alan and Margaret have two Grandchildren:  Simon and Daniel who have both played for Havant Hockey Club and Fareham Cricket Club.  Alan’s great friends during his life were his German Shepherd Dogs:  Bryn, Ben, Rio and Oscar.  Many a time he would be seen with them around a hockey pitch or cricket boundary and at times they would disturb a game by taking the match ball.  He will be greatly missed.  Alan’s funeral will take place at 12.30 p.m. on Thursday 8th March at Portchester Crematorium, Upper Cornaway Lane, Portchester, Fareham PO16 8NE.  Family flowers only but donations may be made to The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation    c/o Coghlans Funeral Directors, Westbury Road, Fareham PO16 7XU.
